The orchestra of and for everyone

The Orquesta Comunitaria de Gran Canaria will hold its first rehearsal on March 6, 2021 at the Hermitage of San Pedro in the Municipality of Telde.
Weeks earlier, in the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic, a group of musicians considered the possibility of creating a vocational symphony formation. They shared the need to create a space for those musicians who, for various reasons, had not had the opportunity to experience playing in an orchestra.
The inaugural concert took place at the Juan Ramón Jiménez Theatre on June 26 of that same year in Telde. This is how an orchestra of just over 25 musicians entered the Canarian cultural scene.

Today, 2 years and 8 concerts later, the OCGC has more than 200 musicians. A symphony orchestra with more than 100 members and a choral group with more than 100 participants.

The OCGC has broken the island barrier and is proud of the participation of a significant number of members who travel each week from different islands to attend rehearsals.

The responsibility and commitment of the members of the orchestra and choir has gradually created an internal management structure by departments, with defined objectives. Non-musical work is carried out there, but it is absolutely necessary for the smooth running of rehearsals and concerts.

The symphonic-choral project is non-profit, in no case is there any remuneration and is sustained thanks to the commitment and support of private sponsors and public institutions.

“A packed auditorium, endless applause for a formidable vocational orchestra, its scale of volumes, from subtle ppp to powerful tutti fff; for its vitality, its soloists and its extraordinary conductor. [...] An orchestra and a conductor who work for the love of art.”

Review of “Un luminoso punto azul”  by Guillermo García-Alcalde

The OCGC repertoire is varied, versatile and attractive. Each new programme becomes an unforgettable adventure, both for the public and for the members of the orchestra and the choir.
It is important to highlight the commitment of the OCGC to artistic creation produced and created in the Canary Islands. The composers Manuel Bonino, Gonzalo Díaz Yerro, Eduardo Purriños, Octavio Suarez, Jesús Agomar, Wilfredo Angulo, Ylenia Álvarez, Laura Vega and Héctor Muñoz are active participants in the project, thanks to their musical creations.

The OCGC has achieved recognition and affection from the public.
At each of its concerts, attendance has been massive, always putting up the sold-out sign.

The OCGC, in continuous expansion, sets its sights on a horizon full of possibilities and new challenges. It wishes to reach more and more musicians and more audiences, in order to
honor its motto “The orchestra of all and for all”.
